Mindfulness

The emergence of mindfulness in Western culture can be attributed to Jon Kabat-Zinn.

In the late 1970s, Kabat-Zinn developed a program called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) to treat chronic pain. He discovered that patients would often try to avoid pain—but that avoidance would lead to deeper distress. Practicing mindfulness was a more successful approach.

As mindfulness shifted into mainstream science and medicine, it became a pivotal therapeutic technique; it was integrated into Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, among others.

As a therapist who works with many ambitious and successful people who are really "on top of their game," I have observed that they/we actually do seem to process anxiety a little differently. One of the biggest differences is that we/they often know how to turn the anxiety into a source of energy rather than seeing it as purely an obstacle.

The key is in learning how to pay attention.

Fears and insecurities about the past and the future can make it difficult to fully appreciate the present.   Mindfulness can be a tool to relinquish self-criticism and judgment while identifying and overcoming difficult emotions.

Its benefits include lowering stress levels, boosting your immune system, and protecting against depression and anxiety. Research even suggests that it can help people better cope with rejection and social isolation.  In addition, mindfulness has been known to re-wire key parts of the brain associated with attention, self-awareness, compassion, and stress.

The Mindfulness Approach is a tool you can use to gain new insights, solve problems, and produce new results in your life.

We will guide you through:

  1. Practicing mindfulness in everyday life.
  2. Returning to your body for greater self-care.
  3. Restoring your happy, centered, and focused energy.
  4. Reflecting and allowing your thoughts to create greater mental clarity.

The new mindfulness skills we share will combine awareness of breathing, body sensation, feelings, and thoughts. When practiced regularly you will find it provides deep relaxation and a renewed perspective on life.
